Dr David Winter — Cambridge University-educated writer, editor, researcher and translator
I established my reputation in travel writing with the North African travel company Expert Algeria, where I led the production of bilingual corporate literature.
I previously served as Editor‑in‑Chief at ACE Cultural Tours, researching and crafting more than 100 travel itineraries every year, ranging from Bhutan to Bolivia, and Bosnia‑Herzegovina to Bulgaria.
As Editor‑in‑Chief at a London‑based writing consultancy, I wrote, edited and translated content for publications across the travel, tourism and arts sectors. Royal Air Maroc’s in‑house magazine is among my former clients.
In other words, I have a practical understanding of the tone, precision and storytelling your copy might require.
"The fifth-century BC historian Herodotus claimed that 'dog-faced creatures' stalked the land that we know today as Libya..." So begins an article on Libya that I was commissioned to write for History Today, "the world's leading serious history magazine".
"The most important things in life, you can divide them into a before and after, can’t you? Like losing your virginity or the day your dog died.
Pedalling up Mont Ventoux falls into the same category—life will never taste the same again."
"Every year in October, the self-proclaimed President of the Free Republic of Montmartre takes to the streets of his quartier for a deliciously absurd procession. I once saw him appear at the bottom of rue Lepic in a convertible limousine, before being escorted up the butte by a troupe of half-naked (male) trumpeters riding motorised skateboards—yes, really." "Today’s mass-selling Le Soir d’Algérie, normally a French-language newspaper, is headlined with a single word in Arabic : Dernaha – ‘We’ve Done It!’" This is one of the "Off The Pitch" articles I was commissioned by a well-known football magazine, When Saturday Comes, on how an African nation reacted to qualifying for the World Cup. Read on for this article and "Since when have Arabs been blond?"
As a trained psychodynamic therapist, with a former private practice in London and Paris — not to mention stints at the University of Essex, Reading University, East 15 Acting School and the University of Westminster — writing about the mind is second nature to me.

"Spectacular even by the Met's extraordinary standards, Franco Zeffirelli's celebrated production of La Traviata will see Angela Gheorghui re-creating her most famous role, Violetta".
With a background in business in the UK, France and North Africa, I am fully versed in the world of corporate communication. I spent almost a decade compiling, writing and researching marketing brochures, newsletters and adverts — here you can see the smallest possible selection.
"Even the most worldly surveyor of ancient civilisations is mesmerised by the monumental splendour of Agrigento —"Athens with improvements", according to one 18th century visitor.
